Morris-Jumel Mansion and Jumel Terrace |
between 160th-162nd Street and Edgecombe and St. Nicholas
Going by subway? It's east of Amsterdam. Take the #1, A, or C.

I found my trip to the Morris-Jumel Mansion, a museum, most gratifying. They have wonderful rooms and furniture in the style of the period, much of it authentic to the house. George Washington's headquarters was here for two months during the Revolutionary War before the British captured Manhattan, which the British held for most of the war. The house pre-dates the American Revolution. Mr. Morris was a British Officer; Mr. Jumel was a very wealthy wine merchant. Mrs. Jumel married Aaron Burr after Jumel's death. Visitors can seen Burr's bedroom and the dining room where Washington and others met for dinner following the Revolution. Admission is minimal, and there is a nice gift shop. [I'll provide more details later, but you can look up the Morris-Jumel Mansion online.] I locked up my bike to the outdoor bench in the front of the porch. |

The kitchen is in the basement. The window is also shown in the picture before this.

Jumel Terrace is across the street from the mansion.

You can see the Morris-Jumel Mansion at the end of the terrace.

The other end of Jumel Terrace: A shopping area where
Amsterdam intersects St. Nicholas is less picturesque, but there are
some nice buildings on St. Nicholas. Amsterdam is largely commercial. |

This is the corner of 160th and Jumel Place, across
the mansion. Jumel Place is only two blocks long here, blocked by a building
to the north, but it continues beyond that briefly. |

Looking west on 160th. He and I both like this street.
