West End Avenue is a residential street between Riverside
Drive and Broadway that extends from 72nd to 107th street. Most of the
apartments are now condominiums. This photo shows 105th to 106th street. |

West End Avenue facing downtown
Our neighborhood has been home to the many famous
people, including George Gershwin and Humphrey Bogart. Bogart grew up
on 103rd between Broadway and West End, and Gershwin lived in a number
of places, including the Whitehall Hotel on Broadway and 100th, at the
opposite end of the square block where I live. This former Gershwin residence
is on 103rd between West End and Riverside. Some photos of this same block

| The brown buildings are called brownstones. Non-brownstones are referred to townhouses or row houses, but townhouse seems to be the term for upscale dwellings. |

107th and Riverside Drive
This mansion at 107th was advertised for sale for $29
million in October 2006. There is also affordable housing in the neighborhood,
largely due to rent stabilization laws, but many rental units have converted
to condominiums in the last few decades. |
