Coming up Central Park West from Columbus Circle, you'll
see The Ethical Culture Society and School between 63rd and 64th. This
door at the YMCA is next to it on 64th. The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
shown is in the next block, at 65th. They've hosted a series of Bach concerts
for many years. |

Second Church of Christ, Scientist, on 68th

Congregation Shearith Israel This building is a striking example of the monumental neo-American Classic style popular for public and ecclesiastical architecture at the turn of the century. Designed by Brunner & Tryon, it is the fifth synagogue erected by the congregation since 1730. The first building, the earliest synagogue in North America, was located on Mill Street, on the site of what is today 22 South William Street. It provided a permanent house of worship for the Jewish settlers who had been meeting in homes or rented quarters since their arrival in New York in 1654. |

Leonard Bernstein and John Lennon lived in the building
with the V-shaped roof, called the Dakota, at 72nd-73rd and CPW. The Dakota
was featured in the film "Rosemary's Baby." I'm at the West
72nd Central Park entrance/exit. |

Let's go uptown from that corner.

We'll head towards the Museum of Natural History.
The Universalist-Unitarian Church is at 76th; The New York Historical
Society is the building with the banners. The Beresford, the building
with the towers, is just beyond the museum at 81st. It was home to the
late violinist Isaac Stern. |

The Museum of Natural History, 77th Street side

| Townhouses on 81st between Columbus and Amsterdam near the Museum of Natural History. As a general rule, you'll find smaller buildings on east-west numbered streets and taller ones on the north-south avenues. (Manhattan tilts about 30 degrees to the east, but to simplify, I'll stick to north-south and east-west.) |

| The Museum of Natural History on Central Park West between 77th and 81st Streets. You can also visit the Hayden Planetarium while there. |

Looking back from 85th and CPW
