Directions: Since I
start my journeys from 99th Street, we'll head south. To get to the greenway,
you need to go under the Henry Hudson Parkway. Go to 99th and Riverside
Drive (upper level), then down to Riverside Drive (lower level) and into
the park there. (Bikers: Avoid steps by going
to the lower Riverside Drive via 97th and heading uptown once in the park).
At about 100th or 101st (inside the park, so there are no street signs),
head for the path down to the underpass (on the river's side). |

We turned left at the river. The main path is along the
Hudson River, but sometimes there are additional "inland" paths
like this onel. You'll soon come to some tennis courts no matter which
path you take. |

Close-up of a barge, not an uncommon sight. EVERYONE
SHOULD TAKE THE BIKE DETOUR at 91st (the underpass). It takes you
to the Community Garden, which is shown on another page. A few "blocks"
south of the garden, take the path down the hill to get back on the main
path. This will take you to the 79th Street Boat Basin Cafe and the marina. |

Kyaking on the Hudson River

| You can reach the 79th Street Boat Basin Cafe from this path or from paths that go up the hill into the woods (shown next) as you exit the pedestrian/bike tunnel a few "blocks" south of the community garden. You can also get there from the west end of 79th Street itself. Just go down some stairs there. |

These are the woods by the marina and 79th Street Boat
Basin Cafe. This scene reminds me of the painting by Georges Seurat (1859-1891)
of people with parasols alongside the Seine, especially when we have sunbathers
and readers with umbrellas. |

Some of these people are waiting for tables at the
Boat Basin Cafe. Others are just hanging out here with their beverages
or whatever. |

This photo, taken at the 79th Street Boat Basin Cafe, was taken October 11th, 2008 on a busy Saturday during the Oktoberfest celebration. I saw Hillary Clinton at the Cafe a weekday afternoon, when it is not nearly as busy. The Cafe is generally open mid to late April through sometime in October or November. Check out their website! |

View from the Cafe.

Birds and pets are welcome. The sparrows love potato chips!

| The same October day. You can lock up your bike inside,
where there is a roof and railings. |

South of the marina

If you take the greenway south, you'll come to a
new pier at about 69th Street. It extends far out into the Hudson River.
Outdoor events are held on the piers. |

Remnants of the past

Hudson River Greenway by the pier, below the West Side Highway
Go back a few blocks and look for the steps that take you to the upper levels of Riverside Park. For the path without steps, continue beyond the steps. You can continue around the island's perimeter if you like, but my photos are not up yet. |
