Midtown Manhattan tour

Saint Patrick's Cathedral, on Fifth Avenue, is across the street from Saks.

If you go up 5th Avenue, you can see St. Thomas
Episcopal Church and Central Synagogue. I don't have a decent photo
of the synagogue now, and it's hard to back up enough to get a good
picture, not uncommon in New York!. |

Paley Park on East 53rd Street. I only have a
night shot of it. That's a waterfall in back. |

Next to Paley Park. Continue to Madison Ave., one block east of Fifth Ave.

We'll head for Grand Central Station. Go downtown
on Madison Ave. At about 44th Street, go left to Vanderbilt Ave., a short
street between Madison and Park Avenue that borders on Grand Central Station. |

Interior of Grand Central Station. There was a holiday
light show this day. The "MTA" on the ceiling, part of the light
show, stands for the Metropolitan Transit Authority. |

Grand Central Station covers several blocks. This is 42nd and Park Ave. South

Park Avenue South (roadway with lights) goes around the
building because the street on the north side was built over old Grand
Central rail yards, and is a good story higher than the south side. The
street is called Park Avenue on the north side and Park Avenue South on
the south. |

Cipriano's is an architectural gem. Although
it's a bank, it is often rented out for fund-raising events that attract
the biggest philanthropists in New York. I hope to get a photograph of
the interior some day. |

The Grand Hyatt Hotel and Chrysler Building taken
from 42nd Street. The Midtown areas we've visited so far are more interesting
than most areas east of Fifth Avenue, which tend to have huge modern structures.
There are a few exceptions, however, such as the United Nations, which
I will add later. |
