On the Greenway around Manhattan Island
for bikers, pedestrians and skaters Battery Park City was built over the Hudson River with landfill from World Trade Center in the 1970s. This tour begins about two blocks north of Chambers street, where you can make a turn from West Street towards the river. Turn a couple of blocks before you come to the pedestrian bridge! This will put you at the northern tip of Battery Park City. We're about a mile from the Battery, the southern tip of Manhattan. |

We've made the turn. Remains of old piers are still in the Hudson River.

This is North Meadow. New Jersey is across the river.
The next turn will take us downtown [south]. |

A water taxi dock is in the river. Be sure to look
for the lily pond near the path down by the trees. It's easy to miss. |

The overhang in the background is the Irish Hunger Memorial.

You can pass through this cottage from Ireland with a bicycle. Inscriptions about the famine are on the walls of the entrance and there is a tape recording about world hunger. Are you ready for a rest stop? There's an Amish Market near here that is a block long. It's both grocery store and buffet, and has a wide variety of prepared foods. You can lock your up bike at one of their anchored outdoor table sets. Head inland. (You may have to walk on some one-way streets.) If you take Vesey, you'll pass Merrill Lynch and the World Financial Center. Go past West and Greenwich streets to W. Broadway. There is a street called Park Place one block north of Vesey when you get to W. Broadway. The Amish Market is between Park Place and Murray on West Broadway. By the way, at that point you're only two blocks away from City Hall Park. |

View from the top of the Irish Hunger Memorial. You'll
need to return from the Amish Market for the next stop on this tour. |
