Fort Tryon Park

Located on the west side of the Fort George-Washington Heights in Manhattan, the park grounds include the Cloisters and Heather Garden as well as the areas between the summit and the streets below (Broadway and Riverside Drive). The park also runs along Cabrini Blvd. between 188th and 190th.

hilltops

At the end of Heather Garden is Fort Tryon's plateau, which overlooks Heather Garden (shown here), the Hudson River and the Cloisters.

Roads by the Cloisters

The flagpole photo was taken from this road, which you can go under to reach the New Leaf Cafe.

New Leaf Cafe

I enjoyed my two visits to the New Leaf Cafe, but the second time they were reluctant to let me take my bike inside. They would like to get bike stands, but there is a lot of bureaucracy involved. There are parking spaces for cars behind the cafe.

Entrance to Gardens and Cloisters

Go through Heather Garden or up the road from the New Leaf Cafe to get to Margaret Corbin Drive at 190th and Ft. Washington Ave., the main pedestrian entrance to Heather Garden and the Cloisters. Margaret Corbin (1751-1800?) took control of her fallen husband's cannon during the 1776 attack by the British and was wounded during the battle. The Continental Army called the strategic series of posts along the Hudson River "Fort Washington" during the summer of 1776, until Hessian mercenaries fighting for the British forced the troops to retreat. The British then renamed the area for Sir William Tryon (1729-1788), Major General and the last British governor of colonial New York. [Information from the Parks Department obtained online.]

Same place, but facing downtown. This is Ft. Washington Ave. and 190th Street. The lamppost with the green sphere marks the subway entrance. I'm standing in front of Margaret Corbin Drive, shown above.
