The Cloisters, a museum devoted to the medieval period,
is part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is located at FortTryon
in Manhattan's Fort George-Washington Heights area. A subway stop at 190th
will take you to nearby Heather Garden, or you can take a tour that will
let you out near the Cloisters' entrance. Admission for the day is good
at both museums: The Cloisters and the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Manhattan's
East Side. |

The Cloisters from Fort Tryon, but we're not here yet.

We're exploring the backside. This section faces the Hudson River.

Don't miss the monastery across the river (zoom factor of three).

There's a parking area on the backside.

The buses pull up here.

The Cloisters opened in 1938 after John D. Rockefeller, Jr. (1874-1960) brought sculptor George Grey Barnard's (1863-1938) collection of medieval art. Inspired by Romanesque monasteries, the museum includes several cloisters, or courtyards, from actual French monasteries. There are wonderful tapestries and many other treasures to behold. |

If you drive, you'll most likely come this way.

Continue left on this path to Heather Garden.

I think this was taken from the circular lookout in the last photo.
