Fort George Tour
The Greenway

Manhattan's West Side, 179th Street to Dyckman St./Riverside Dr. (about 200th)

climbing

At the end of our Washington Heights Hudson River trip we climbed this hill.

Rock outcrop

It brought us to the path by Riverside Drive.

Castle Hill wall

Looking back, we can see the Castle Hill calamity. The wall fell down, blocked the road and buried cars. They reopened one of the lanes but didn't recover the cars for more than a year.

Cloisters arches

The pillars are near these arches, part of Heather Garden, so we must be near 190th Street.

Fort Tryon walls

Fort Tryon walls are across the roadway, but they don't date back to the American Revolution, though battles were fought here.

Hills in Manhattan

Our path will end soon. Take the last exit, pass under "parkway" Riverside Drive which will put you on a smaller Riverside Drive. Cross to the right side of Riverside Drive once you've gone under the underpass. The hill to the Cloisters is 8-10 stories high, so you can't miss it. You'll see a Fort Tryon Park sign at an entrance soon. The next two photos show that climb to the Cloisters.

Climb to the Cloisters

If this path is too steep a climb or too remote for you--I usually see one or two persons going up or down--you can proceed to Broadway and continue around the park until you see other uphill paths. The Cloisters can also be reached by the subway to 190th Street, by city buses, tour buses and by easier climbs from the south on Fort Washington Avenue.
