Tavern on the Green
Sheep Meadow, Maine Monument
71st to 59th street, west side

New York City Marathon preparations are not far from where we left off.

Sheep Meadow. Sheep grazed here until 1934.

The white tents were set up in preparation for the marathon.

On the West Side, just above 65th street, you'll find Tavern on the Green,
a special-occasion kind of place. I attended a wedding dinner here. This view was taken from the back,
where the outdoor tables are. Tavern on the Green once housed sheep and a shepherd. |

Tavern on the Green, front entrance.

Sheep Meadow is above 65th, Heckscher Ballfields are below.

Sometimes the grounds are fenced in to give the grass a chance to grow.

The Maine Monument commemorates those who lost their
lives during the sinking of the ship in Cuba in 1898. Many decades later
we learned that the explosion was an accident, not sabotage. |
