Central Park
Belvedere Castle, Turtle Pond
Delacorte Theater, Swedish Cottage
Just south of the Great Lawn between 79th and 81st
streets and between north-south drives to the east and west. |

Belvedere Castle from the Great Lawn. Turtle Pond is in the foreground.

Let's go around to the other side.

You'll often see musicians in Central Park. I came
across these people playing Early music this particular day. |

Let's climb the hills to Shakespeare Garden and Belvedere Castle.

Entrance to Belvedere Castle

Completed in 1872, Belvedere Castle originally overlooked
the lower Croton Reservoir, which was filled in to create the Great Lawn in 1937.
Belvedere is now a weather observatory where we get the readings from Central Park. |

This is where I got my Central Park map.

The Great Lawn is where outdoor concerts are held. Sometimes
100,000 people showed up, but then the City started to limit the crowds
to 50,000; it is about to raise it to 75,000 (2008). There are a lot of
ball parks too. East Side buildings are in the background, Turtle Pond
in the foreground. |

The Descent: The Luce Nature Observatory and the
Swedish Cottage. The Swedish Cottage was imported from Sweden for a World's
Fair exhibit. |

The Swedish Cottage (79th), now a marionette theater,
is on the west drive inside the park. |
