Central Park
The Ramble, a wilderness area

Central Park has 136 acres of woodlands, including the Ramble and the North Woods. The Ramble extends from the Lake's northern edge (73rd and 74th street) to 79th and lies between the north-south drives to the east and west. The paths are quite close together, so it is pretty safe even in the remotest areas, especially on weekends. You'll find old ladies and men sitting on benches in the middle of the wilderness, sometimes alone, sometimes not.

sycamores and clearing

Sycamores and clearing. Coming from Cedar Hill, we'll be near the top of the Ramble (79th.) It's too hard to give directions, for there are many paths. Here are some random photos.

boating

If you turned left as you came from Cedar Hill and followed the shore opposite the boathouse (barely visible paths), you may have reached the Point, the end of a little peninsula and the southernmost area of the Ramble, close to (but across the lake from) the Terrace and Bethesda Fountain. This observer at the Point enjoys watching boaters.

boaters on the lake

There's a lot of bramble in the ramble, and the Point is really off the beaten path.

Central Park Ramble and Lake

Bethesda Fountain and Terrace are in the distance. This little inlet is between the peninsula with the Point (left) and a larger landmass with Bow Bridge at its tip. Bow Bridge connects the Ramble and Cherry Hill.

The Gill, a brook

The Gill is next to Azalea Pond. This area is hard to find, but it's on a Central Park map.

stone arch bridge

You'll most likely see this pedestrian tunnel and bridge at some point. It's not from the West Side bridge north of the Lake. Head uphill for the following two views (but it may be easier to use the wooden railing as a reference. You'll see it in the next photo).

ramble stream

That wooden railing (far center) is by the lake, so when you see it, head uphill on a path.

Photographs of the Ramble

That's the rock featured in many photos from Hernshead, which we'll visit soon..

Upper West Side at sunset

And here we are at that rock, across from Hernshead, the boulder in the distance.

Hernshead, on the west side near the north-south drive (75th).

Boaters' lake

If you entered at WEST 79th, you passed over a little bridge by the gray-green reeds. The dome is part of the Museum of Natural History.

fallen tree

This fallen tree, by the north-south drive, is on a path to the Ramble entrance near 79th. If you missed the little hill with the brook and would like to see it, the easiest way to find it is to go north from Hernshead (75th) and veer right (77th), then make a another right across the bridge with the green duckweed and follow the shoreline. Then go uphill at some point when you see the wooden railing.
